Entwining art and life, absence and recollection, parent and child, Song Dong bridges the gap between the past and present, allowing him to forge new paths and relations in the future. Nor does it resemble how the activists themselves have talked about their actions. The aim of Just Stop Oil and Letzte Generation has been to wheedle people for not caring more about the climate crisis. Yet even if one were inclined to defend their tactics—and argue, for example, that the activists showed admirable restraint by choosing to defile paintings that were protected by a pane of glass—the protests still fail on their own terms. A nonscientific branch of learning; one of the liberal arts.

Greco Buddhist art is one of the most vivid examples of this interaction. The meeting of different cultures and worldviews also influenced artistic creation. An example of this is the multicultural port metropolis of Trieste at the beginning of the 20th century, where James Joyce met writers from Central Europe and the artistic development of New York City as a cultural melting pot. The more recent and specific sense of the word art as an abbreviation for creative art or fine art emerged in the early 17th century. Fine art refers to a skill used to express the artist’s creativity, or to engage the audience’s aesthetic sensibilities, or to draw the audience towards consideration of more refined or finer work of art. From artistic masterpieces and vast tapestries to precious personal possessions, the range and breadth of the collections in our care is astonishing.

His Pop Art-like aesthetics catapulted modern Japanese obsessions such as anime into the mainstream art world. Inspired by his work as a highly paid commercial illustrator in New York, Andy Warhol’s screen-printed images of everyday consumer objects and visual imagery from mainstream media would come to define the Pop Art movement. As reigning king, he helped blur the boundaries between high and low art, bringing what was normally considered “commercial” into the fine art lexicon.
